Current condition of Xiongan

As the establishment of Xiong’an is a long term planning, Xiong’an is going to build a future city seeking the new mode to optimize the development of high-density areas. Currently it is definitely not a high density area according to the diagram, the built-up areas were decentralized like towns or villages. And due to the influence of flood that more than half of this city area was not suitable for buildings.

Chinease Academy of Science(CAS) has made the study on prediction of the built-up area in Xiong’an and by 2050 when Xiong’an population achieved 5,000,000 the pop-density in the built-up area is around 6,700per/km2, which is pretty close to Tokyo’s  6,150per/km2.

In Tokyo the day/night population ratio ranged from the highest 1738.8% to lowest 84.1%, you can imagine that how much people rush to the subway station of Chiyoda district every morning.

The central areas of a city always accompanies with high rises and close road grids to obtain more spaces and traffic flows.

Field is a bunch of correlations by which the elements were arranged in a random or symmetrical patern, or just sets of units with different sizes. We have these fields to bend with typical high density cities as Los Angels and Tokyo.

Los Angels have a clear boundary between the large block areas and the small ones, offering a clear structure of a planned urban map. Slight differences in color of the satellite map is detected by neural transfer and influence the morphing of a brand new city, which turns out to be more organic, especially with those squares and connections between the blocks.

As in Nakano, more space is needed near the central station where a large flow of people is brought by the Shinkansen train. By style transfer youcantell that the dark areas as expanded like a plaza, also at the road cross the open space is expaned too.

If reverse the content image and style, the result image is almost the same structure as the field is organized. It is a top-down design method, but in a emotional way rather than a rational.

I chose a patch of both built-up area and none built-up area of Xiong’an bend with one of the field.

To have a high resolution image, the area is patched by 16 pieces, results by style transfer inherent the link between each other and can complete a whole map too.

Sampling the coloration of the image and apply a hight to it, we have a 3D version of the result for further analyze. Not all the area is as clear as varied in hight though, but you can tell how the color as an important imformation is transferred during the progress.

The higher the contrast of color is, the clearer the structure of the 3D image is. The diagram below analyzed the road grid of Tokyo. It has only two colors, the brighter the area has closer grids, which is exactly where the high-density area is.

The outcome image highlights the building area and even kept the lake area.

The whole area is organised with several open spaces like plazas or city parks maybe, surrounding them are public buildings. Also higher buildings share more public spaces and wider roads for more population density.

At last in conclusion I’d like to say that style transfer generize a city in a brand new way. It is the quality we can judge and analyze but never to imagine or create by hand. Besides all the work and projects we’ve done this term, there’s still a lot more we take deeper exploration.
